Who are the Native Americans of Nebraska?

There are five major Indian tribes in the state of Nebraska, the Omaha, the Winnebago, the Lakota Sioux, the Ponca, and the Santee Sioux. These tribes have been around for thousands of years and have a great history that is greatly connected with our own.

In history, Nebraska was known as being a flat grassland with nothing interesting to do but farm. This is simply not true. Although there was no mass killings, or some of the drama we saw unfold in other parts of the world, does not mean that Nebraska is void of interesting history. We come from a rich cultural background that could have started as early as thousands of years ago. We have our ancient ancestors that were here before the settlers to give us the story of how they lived before us. Indians, or Native Americans as some call them, are the original inhabitants of the Untied States. Through commercialization we think of Indians as the bad guys or the people who fight cowboys but in all reality it is the opposite. We owe the Native Americans for the existence of our country today. Without the Indians the first colony would have failed and it's people would have starved to death. Yet a great injustice was done to the Native Americans. We gave them disease and took their land. We corrupted their lifestyle and culture, and for some we even stripped away their identities. This website is about remembering customs and the ways of life for the early Indians, and about remembering the vibrant and rich culture, that is a cornerstone of our own.
