A History of The Barclays

In all of it's time it is the most intersting and most watched league in the UK. From 18 year old highschool grads to 35 year old superstars, it is the league thatcomines all nations. Thinking that they first started on the 15th of August '92 is a crazy thought.

In the 1980's, English football was on the drop. Stadiums were collapsing and the streets were filled with hoodlums. After 39 fans were killed in 1985 during the Liverpool/Juventus cup final at Heysel Stadium, The League was banned from Europe.

Reconstruction

Set against unsermountable odds of implementing the recommendations of advisors and a fear of not attracting good players, the top clubs began to show unhappiness with the ways it was going. In 1988 or earlier, 10 clubs had made the threat of breaking away. This threat was to be able to tae advatage of the better television revenue.

Reconstruction was in high demand if the league and even the English game was to at the very least survive, and maybe flourish.

On July 17 1991, the FMA, or Founder Members Agreement was signed, setting up the basics for the Premier League. This agreement was stated as having the Premier League control it's own broadcasting and sponsorship agreemnets, away from The FA and The Football League.
