The Surfing Culture
The sport of surfing and love for surfing creates a very unique culture, offshoot from the mainstream
culture we Nebraskans think of. Surf culture includes fashion, lingo, and music. There
are many things that influence this culture, but the biggest thing that influences this is the love
for the ocean and for surfing. There are many sterotypes people have when it comes
to surfing culture because many times the media all around us wants us to believe that all surfers
smoke pot, do nothing with their lives, and always say "DUDE". This is not true, surfers are just
unique, just like you and me!

Fashion
The first thing a surfer will tell you is that they don't really care what they look like,
as long what they're wearing is comfortable and fairly cheap. Surfwear is a very casual look
because of this desire. Many times surfers would throw on one of their dad's old plaid shirts
in the morning and head down to the beach. They didn't care what the shirt looked like because
it was something warm and easy to take on and off after a surf session. Surfers have been notorious
for dressing "differently" though, because they don't wear your typical mainstream clothes. Also,
surfers have been known to wear things given to them because it's free and the producers know it's a very
successful way to market a new style or trend. Many of the things that are worn around the world
today were first worn by surfers. Many surfers wore ugg boots after they surfed because it was
a way to keep their feet warm, now uggs are worn by almost every girl because they're considered
cool and trendy by most. Here is a list of common things surfers wear:
- Vans Shoes
- High Socks
- Long and Baggy Shorts
- T-Shirts
- Trucker Hats
- Sweatshirts
- Skinny Jeans
- Anthing Plaid
- Anything Skater/Surfer Branded
- Shades(sunglasses)
Manufacturers take advantage of the surfing culture's fashion because in the past it has
been very popular amongst those who haven't touched a surfboard. But, many times these people
that are wanna be sufers like the trendy look that surfers pull off ever so easy.
This desire to appear like a surfer has produced a boom in the production of clothes that mimic
those of surfers. In short, surfing culture
influences businesses that produce surfing clothes. A common list of popular surfing
brands include the following but aren't limited to:
