History

The World Cup has a long, a prestigious history. It began when Jules Rimet, the president of the World Football Federation, planted the idea for a world competition. He believed that "soccer could reinforce the ideals of a permanent and real peace." He saw soccer as not just a game, but a tool to bring a more peaceful and unified world. He began to make his push for this world tournament in 1926. Within that same year, plans had been layed down to have a world tournament. This tournament was scheduled to be held in the year 1930. In 1928, the first teams, five european countries, were selected to play in the first World Cup, which would be hosted in Uruguay. On July 13th, 1930, Rimet finally saw his dream realized as the first kickoff of the World Cup took place. In the end, Uruguay was able to claim victory over Argentina for the bragging rights of the first World Cup. This is how to World Cup came to be. Since this first World Cup, 17 more have followed, with all being as good, if not better then the one before it. Throughout the decades, Brazil has become a dominante force in the World Soccer stage. They have managed to win four World Cup Championships, and have competed in all 18 World Cups. They are closely follwed by Italy and Germany who have both won three World Cups. The only other teams to win a World Cup are Argentina, Uruguay, France, and England. In the last 80 years, the World Cup has brought together countries and brought together our world for one common purpose: soccer.
